Musical Instruments

I built this 3D project in Autodesk Maya, moving from precision 3D modeling of everyday items to handcrafted wooden instruments. Then, I combined all the assets into one surreal art setup and brought it to life with a multi-camera animated sequence.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT, 3D MODELLING & MULTI-CAMERA ANIMATION

PROJECT OVERVIEW & SCOPE This was a long three-part project where I tackled everything in Autodesk Maya, starting with exact 1:1 object modeling before building a collection of wooden instruments. The challenge was pulling all these random everyday items and instruments into one surreal art setup. I also brought it to life with a three-camera animated sequence.

MODELLING OF EVERYDAY OBJECTS __ I built the computer mouse, water bottle, and chess pieces to true scale using direct reference images. __ Also ran clean edge loops and smooth surface transitions to nail the ergonomic curves of the mouse and the classic chess profiles. __ I set up distinct shaders to capture real physical properties, balancing ridged, translucent plastic with slick, high-gloss ceramics.

MODELLING OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS __ I gathered and analyzed several photo references to capture the exact contours, carved details, and unique mechanical parts of each percussion piece. __ Also modeled complex, tactile silhouettes maintaining clean edges for the 3D models. __ I built out tiny functional elements like metal cymbals, jingle pins, and carved ridges to give the instruments an authentic, handcrafted feel.

WIREFRAMING OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS I built dense, uniform wireframes around all the carved handles and curved bodies to make sure the meshes subdivide smoothly without any odd pinching. By keeping the edge loops clean and deliberate, the procedural wood grains wrap around the instruments naturally without awkward stretching.

UNIFIED CONCEPT __ I designed an abstract stage concept that naturally bridges modern plastic gadgets, chess pieces, and traditional wooden instruments into one harmonious world. __ Also planned a layered podium layout using contrasting heights and geometric shapes so no single object steals all the attention. __ I arranged the props deliberately around curved architectural forms to guide the viewer’s eye seamlessly across the entire scene.

MATERIAL & TEXTURE PIPELINE __ I paired speckled terrazzo plinths with fluted deep-red paneling to build a bold, modern backdrop. __ Also balanced the soft, natural grain of the wooden instruments against sleek plastics, clear bottle glass, and spun brass details. __ I carefully tuned roughness and grain settings so the light reflects naturally across both high-gloss chess pieces and matte stone podiums.

ANIMATION OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS I animated the musical instruments in their own isolated setup, zooming in the camera on each prop to show the detail and texture on them. By fine-tuning the motion curves in Maya, I animated four cameras to create a cinematic but fast video showing the details on all objects.

MULTI-CAMERA DIRECTION & CINEMATIC FRAMING I set five different camera animated system using a mix of sweeping wide angles and tight close-ups to reveal every corner of the set. By moving past foreground arches and tiered podiums, each camera angle captures rich parallax and highlights the unique details across the entire installation.

FINAL UNIFIED STAGE The final deliverable brings all three phases together into a fully textured, cinematic 3D motion piece. Animated across five seamless camera angles, the video captures the playful rhythm of the instruments and the elegant balance of the entire modern art stage.

KEY IMPACTS & OUTCOME __ Full Maya Pipeline: Deepened my Maya skills by handling everything from exact 3D modeling to texturing and camera animation. __ Creative Staging: Learned how to blend random objects like tech gadgets and instruments into one clean, modern scene. __ Camera Work: Gained hands-on experience directing three to five different cameras to create depth and guide the viewer's eye. __ Unified Look: Mastered lighting and materials so wood, plastic, stone, and metal look natural sitting right next to each other.
